Sebaceous Cyst Excision

Contact us for a diagnostic appointment.

A sebaceous cyst is a common, benign lesion that develops beneath the skin due to the blockage of sebaceous glands or hair follicles. It typically appears as a round, movable lump under the skin and can develop in various areas of the body, such as the scalp, face, neck, back, or trunk.

Although most cysts do not cause problems, some may increase in size, cause discomfort, become inflamed, or get infected. In these cases, as well as for aesthetic reasons, surgical excision may be recommended.

Complete removal of the cyst along with its wall constitutes the most effective treatment and helps reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Consultation Visit

During the visit, a clinical examination of the area will take place, and a complete medical history will be obtained.

Factors to be evaluated include:

  • The size and location of the cyst
  • The duration of the lesion’s presence
  • Potential increase in size
  • Symptoms such as pain, inflammation, or discharge of contents

Based on the findings, the most appropriate therapeutic approach will be discussed.

Where will the surgery take place

Depending on the size and location of the cyst, the procedure is performed either in the fully equipped surgical facility of our clinic in Heraklion or in a private clinic.

How the surgery is performed

The procedure is performed through a small incision over the cyst site, allowing for the complete removal of the lesion along with its wall. Complete removal is crucial, as it reduces the likelihood of the cyst recurring.

In cases of active inflammation or infection, management of the inflammation may be required initially, and the definitive excision will be performed at a later stage.

Subsequently, careful closure of the wound is performed, aiming for the best possible aesthetic result.

Anesthesia & Length of Hospital Stay

In most cases, the operation is performed under local anesthesia and lasts approximately 20–45 minutes.

Hospitalization is not required, and the patient returns home on the same day.

Associated risks in sebaceous cyst excision

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, although they occur relatively rarely. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, hematoma, delayed healing, minor asymmetries, or changes in local sensation. In some cases, recurrence may occur, particularly if the cyst wall has not been completely removed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What to expect after the surgery?

Following the procedure, it is normal to experience mild swelling, minor bruising, or slight discomfort in the area, all of which typically subside gradually over the coming days.

Detailed instructions will be provided regarding wound care and the management of the area during the healing process.

Will it leave a scar?

The excision of a cyst requires a surgical incision and, therefore, leaves a small scar. Its exact location and size depend on the size and location of the cyst.

Incisions are designed to be as discreet as possible, and the scars typically improve significantly over time.

How long will it take to return to my normal life?

Most patients can return to their daily activities on the same or the following day, depending on the operated area.

Strenuous physical activity may need to be restricted for a few days.

What do I need to know long-term?

The complete removal of the cyst typically leads to a permanent cure for that specific lesion. However, some individuals may develop new cysts in different areas of the body over time.
