Nipple Reconstruction

Contact us for a diagnostic appointment.

Nipple and areola reconstruction is typically the final stage of breast reconstruction following a mastectomy. Although it is a relatively minor procedure, it can contribute significantly to completing the appearance of the breast, offering a greater sense of symmetry and wholeness to the final result.

The procedure is usually performed after the breast reconstruction is complete and the shape and volume of the breast have stabilized. The creation of the new nipple and areola is customized based on the patient’s anatomy, the characteristics of the other breast, and the patient’s preferences.

Consultation Visit

During the consultation visit, the outcome of the breast reconstruction will be evaluated, and the available options for creating the nipple and areola will be discussed.

Detailed information will be provided regarding:

  • The technique to be used
  • The size and position of the new nipple
  • The expectations for the final outcome
  • The recovery process

The goal is to achieve a natural and harmonious result that matches the overall shape of the breast.

Where will the surgery take place

The procedure is performed either in the fully equipped surgical facility of our clinic in Heraklion or in a private hospital, depending on the requirements of the process.

How the surgery is performed

Nipple reconstruction is typically performed using small local skin flaps from the breast itself, which are appropriately shaped to create the projection of the new nipple.

Areola reconstruction can be achieved either through medical tattooing (micropigmentation) or by using a skin graft, depending on the needs of each case.

The process is carefully planned to achieve symmetry with the natural breast or the best possible aesthetic result in cases of bilateral reconstruction.

Anesthesia & Length of Hospital Stay

The operation is usually performed under local anesthesia and lasts approximately 30–60 minutes.

In most cases, hospitalization is not required, and the patient returns home on the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What to expect after the surgery?

Following the procedure, it is normal to experience mild swelling, tenderness, or minor discomfort in the area, all of which typically subside over the coming days.

Detailed instructions will be provided regarding local care and the protection of the new nipple during the initial healing stage.

Will it leave scars?

The incisions used are small and designed to blend as seamlessly as possible into the contours of the breast. The scars typically become less visible over time.

How long will it take to return to my normal life?

Most patients can return to their daily activities within 1–2 days. Typically, you only need to temporarily avoid applying heavy pressure or causing injury to the area for the first few weeks.

What do I need to know long-term?

Over time, there may be minor changes in the shape or projection of the nipple. Additionally, the color of the areola following a medical tattoo may require a touch-up in the future.
